Bioplastics are relatively new materials, so there are many questions about their properties, sustainability and processing. Below, we answer the most frequently asked questions

What is Bioplastic? + -

Bioplastics are plastics that are made wholly or partly from renewable resources, such as plant-based residual streams. This makes bioplastics an alternative to traditional plastics, which are mainly produced from fossil-based resources.

Bioplastics can be bio-based and/or biodegradable. Bio-based means that the material is made from renewable resources. Biodegradable means that the material can be biologically broken down under the right conditions. These properties are not the same: a bioplastic can be bio-based without being biodegradable, and vice versa.

Our range includes both bio-based and biodegradable plastics. Our materials are mainly produced in the Netherlands and, depending on the type of material, can be recycled and/or composted.

What are biodegradable plastics? + -

Biodegradable means that a material can be biologically broken down into natural substances, such as water, minerals and gases. This process takes place under the influence of factors including moisture, temperature and microorganisms.

How quickly a biodegradable material breaks down depends on the material itself and the conditions under which it is placed.

What are bio-based plastics? + -

Bio-based means that a plastic is made wholly or partly from renewable resources. The term therefore refers to the origin of the material. Bio-based plastics can, for example, be made from residual streams and raw materials from various industries. Examples include starch, cellulose from wood, and sugars from corn and sugarcane.

A bioplastic can be made entirely from renewable resources, but it can also be combined with traditional, fossil-based plastics to give the material specific properties. The bio-based content is usually expressed as a percentage. For example, PLA is 100% bio-based, while BioPET contains 30% bio-based resources.

How does composting bioplastics work? + -

Composting is a way of breaking down organic materials (materials of natural origin). This process occurs through a combination of oxygen, heat, moisture and microorganisms, which break down the organic material and convert it into water, humus and carbon dioxide.

There are two main types of composting:

Industrial composting: This takes place in a specialised facility where the composting process is accelerated under controlled conditions using moisture and heat. Under the right conditions, bioplastics can break down and be converted into compost within a few weeks.

Home composting: On a compost heap, heat, moisture and microorganisms cause bioplastic products to break down into compost. This process takes considerably longer because the conditions on a compost heap can vary continuously.

The size of the bioplastic material also plays a role. Large sheets will compost more slowly than small pieces that have, for example, been shredded beforehand.

What is the minimum order quantity? + -

All of our standard products can be ordered from 1 piece onwards through our webshop.

Is it possible to order custom-sized sheets? + -

Yes, we can cut our bioplastic sheets to your desired dimensions. Please contact us to discuss the possibilities.

Is it possible to order a sample? If so, how? + -

Yes, you can order samples of our bioplastic materials. Samples are available individually or as a set through our Samples page. This allows you to see and experience the different materials and their properties before placing an order.

What is the delivery time of the products? + -

The standard delivery time for our products is 2 to 5 working days, depending on availability. For larger and/or custom-cut sheets, the delivery time is generally 3 to 8 working days. The exact delivery time may vary depending on the product and order.

Can I return an item? + -

Yes, private customers can return standard products within 14 days of receiving them, as long as the products are unused and undamaged. After registering your return, we will provide you with a return label to send the product back.
