Bioplastic is a new product, so it makes sense that there are many questions about it. Below we have listed some of the most frequently asked questions.
Bioplastics are plastics that are made wholly or partly on the basis of renewable raw materials. For more detailed information, see the page What is Bioplastic?
Biodegradable says something about the degradability of the bioplastic. If a bioplastic type is biodegradable, it means that it breaks down into natural substances such as water, minerals and gases.
Biobased means that the bioplastic is made from natural and renewable raw materials. It says something about the origin of the bioplastics. Biobased plastic can be made from residual flows from industry such as; starch, cellulose from wood and sugars from corn and sugar cane.
Some biobased plastics partly consist of natural raw materials and traditional plastics in order to give certain properties to the end product. This is usually indicated with a percentage. 100% biobased products such as PLA or, for example, 30% biobased such as biopet.
Composting is a way to break down organic materials (materials of natural origin). This is done by a combination of oxygen, heat, moisture, bacteria and fungi (microorganisms) that breaks down the organic material and converts it into water, humus and carbon dioxide.
This composting can be done in 2 ways:
industrial composting: This is an installation where the composting process is accelerated in a controlled manner with the help of moisture and heat. In a few weeks, the bioplastic can be converted into compost.
home composting; the well-known compost heap ensures that the bioplastic products are also broken down into compost through heat, moisture and micro-organisms. This only takes much longer because the conditions change all the time.
In addition, the size of the pieces that are composted also matters. Large slabs will compost more slowly than small pieces that have been shredded first.
