In the seventeenth edition of InnovatieNU, a trade magazine focused on innovation in the manufacturing industry, research was conducted into the development of new materials. InnovatieNU is an initiative of the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Advanced Manufacturing at the University of Twente. For the seventeenth edition of InnovatieNU, Bioplasticshop was interviewed about the development of bio-based sheet material in collaboration with Zespri. For the production of new retail displays, Zespri, the global distributor of kiwis grown in New Zealand, consciously sought a more sustainable material that supports the ecological credibility of the brand. This search led to a collaboration with Bioplasticshop. Specifically for applications such as retail displays, we developed Mellanyl: a bio-based, biodegradable, and recyclable sheet material that offers a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic sheets based on finite fossil raw materials.

In addition to reducing dependence on fossil raw materials, Mellanyl offers good processing capabilities. The material is suitable for milling, line bending, thermoforming, and CNC cutting, among other processes, allowing it to be easily processed within existing plastic production systems.

By developing bio-based sheet materials suitable for practical applications, we contribute to a more sustainable alternative to conventional plastics.
